Backtesting Software for Stocks and Crypto: Which Platforms Cover Both Markets in 2026?

If you trade both markets, you want backtesting software for stocks and crypto that tests an idea on Apple and on Bitcoin without switching tools. As of 12 October 2026, three of the four platforms compared here list both stocks and crypto on their own pages: CoinQuant, TrendSpider and QuantConnect. Backtrex lists crypto, forex, indices and commodities, but its page does not name stocks.
The bigger difference is how you build a strategy. QuantConnect is code first and TrendSpider is chart first. Backtrex starts from trades you mark on a chart, while CoinQuant, an AI trading platform, turns a plain English description into rules it backtests.
Every fact below comes from each vendor's own page, captured on 12 October 2026, and CoinQuant's stock coverage is confirmed with a live stock backtest. Where a page is silent, we say "not documented".
Quick Answer: Backtesting Software for Stocks and Crypto
- CoinQuant: stocks, ETFs, indices, forex, commodities and crypto in one catalogue. You describe a strategy in plain English, no coding required.
- TrendSpider: its pricing page lists US equities and ETFs, global cryptocurrencies, forex and futures data, with backtesting inside a charting platform.
- QuantConnect: US stocks and ETFs since 1998 and thousands of crypto pairs, with code first, portfolio level backtesting.
- Backtrex: forex, indices, crypto and commodities on M1 to D1 data. Stocks are not named on its page.
So if you want to backtest stocks and crypto in one platform, the first three are the shortlist. The table below compares all four.
How We Compared
We read each vendor's own pages on 12 October 2026 and compared four things:
- Markets documented: only what the vendor's page lists, nothing inferred.
- Strategy input: plain English, chart marks, visual scripting or code.
- Data and timeframes: the bar sizes and history each page states.
- Pricing model: subscription, paid upgrades or a lifetime licence paid once. No prices are quoted, because plans and prices change often; check each vendor's pricing page before you buy.
CoinQuant is our own product, so its row cites only its public docs and a backtest anyone can repeat. We also include a section on where another tool is the better pick.

Comparison Table: CoinQuant, TrendSpider, QuantConnect and Backtrex
| Platform | Stocks and ETFs | Crypto | Other markets listed | How you build a strategy | Pricing model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CoinQuant | 7,711 stocks and 5,157 ETFs; "Bars only (Pro and Elite)" per the docs FAQ | 48 crypto pairs covering 21 crypto assets | Indices, forex, commodities | Plain English prompt turned into editable rules; no coding required | Pro and Elite plans, billed weekly, monthly or yearly; 3-day free trial for paid plans |
| TrendSpider | "US Equities & ETFs" data | "Global Cryptocurrencies" data | Futures, options, indexes, forex | Charting platform with backtesting, "Visual Scripting" and an "AI Coding Assistant" | Subscription plans, plus optional paid upgrades such as additional market data and Sidekick AI tiers |
| QuantConnect | "US Stock and ETFs since 1998" | "Thousands of cryptocurrency pairs from six exchanges" | Options, futures, forex, CFDs, indexes | Code (research notebooks and the open source LEAN engine), plus the Mia AI assistant | Free account to start; paid tiers not documented on the captured page |
| Backtrex | Not named on its page | Listed: "Forex, indices, crypto, commodities" | Forex, indices, commodities (17 assets, M1 to D1, 10 years) | Place three trades on a chart, paste Pine script or describe the strategy in your own words | Lifetime licence paid once (Pro or Max); first backtest free |
The rows show what each vendor documents, not a ranking. A blank on a vendor's page does not prove a feature is missing, so ask the vendor if a market you need is not listed.
CoinQuant: Stocks Confirmed on a Live Backtest
CoinQuant added stocks, ETFs, indices, forex pairs and commodities to backtesting on 27 July 2026, according to its changelog. As of 12 October 2026, its Supported Assets page says: "CoinQuant covers 13,151 tradable instruments across six asset classes, including 48 major crypto pairs."
| Asset class | Instruments listed (as of 12 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Stocks | 7,711 |
| ETFs | 5,157 |
| Indices | 122 |
| Forex | 73 |
| Commodities | 40 |
| Crypto | 48 pairs (21 crypto assets) |
The page also has a searchable instrument list, so you can confirm a ticker before you build anything.

On access, the docs FAQ states, as of 12 October 2026: "Stocks, ETFs, Forex, Commodities: Bars only (Pro and Elite)".
In CoinQuant, you describe a rule in plain English, pick the instrument, whether a crypto pair or a stock such as AAPL, and the platform backtests it on historical data. To check that stocks work in practice, we ran the simplest possible stock test, AAPL Buy and Hold 1D 2021-2026, which buys Apple on the first daily bar and holds it from 2021-08-01 to 2026-08-01. It completed with a Total Return of 116.88% and a Max Drawdown of 33.24%.
That run proves only that a stock can be backtested on CoinQuant today. It is a single position, so the results card marks it "Statistically inconclusive": one trade, and it needs 50+ to rate. It says nothing about how any stock strategy would perform.

Where Another Tool Is the Better Pick
Each tool here is built for a different kind of trader. If one of these needs is yours, the other tool is likely the better fit.
| If you need | Better pick | From its own page |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio tests across many securities, options or futures | QuantConnect | "multi-asset backtesting on portfolios comprised of thousands of securities with realistic margin-modeling" |
| Chart based equity research with scanners and options flow | TrendSpider | "Over 300+ Indicators", "Chart Pattern Recognition", "Unusual Options Flow" |
| Forex or indices from trades marked on a chart, paid once | Backtrex | "One-time payment, no renewal"; "Forex, indices, crypto, commodities. M1 to D1." |
| One rule on a stock, an ETF or a crypto pair, written in plain English | CoinQuant | Plain English strategy building across 13,151 instruments; fees can be set per order |
If you write code and test many symbols at once, QuantConnect is built for that. If you trade single instruments and want to describe the rule in words, CoinQuant is built for that route.
What Changes When You Move Between Markets
Stocks trade on exchange days; crypto trades every day. The AAPL daily run has no bars on weekends and market holidays, which is normal for a stock and not a data gap, while a daily crypto test has a bar for every calendar day. A rule with a fixed bar count, such as a 50-bar average, therefore covers a longer calendar span on a stock than on a coin.
History differs too. The Supported Assets page lists a "Data from" date in its instrument list. For instruments other than crypto, it is "the recorded history start in the reference verified on 22 Jul 2026". Check it before you choose a start date.

The Practical Lesson
- Read the vendor's own page: coverage changes, so check the markets list before you buy.
- Match the input to how you work: code (QuantConnect), charts (TrendSpider, Backtrex) or plain English (CoinQuant).
- Confirm stocks with a real run: one AAPL backtest on CoinQuant returned 116.88% with a Max Drawdown of 33.24%, proof of coverage rather than of performance.
- Mind the calendar: stock bars skip weekends and holidays; crypto bars do not.
If one stock and crypto strategy tester is the goal, shortlist the tools whose pages list both, then run the same simple rule on a stock and a coin before you commit.
Build trading strategies on real data. No coding required.
