Does Buying a 52-Week High Work in Crypto? BNB Daily Breakout Backtest (2021-2026)

A 52-week high strategy crypto traders often ask about is simple: buy when a coin closes above its highest price of the past year, then hold while the trend lasts. On daily BNB from August 2021 to August 2026, that rule fired only three times. It returned 19.27% after fees, while simply holding BNB returned 72.58%.

Three trades in five years is an anecdote, not evidence. The rule waited until February 2024 for its first signal, made all of its profit on that one trade and lost on the next two. Its Max Drawdown of 47.22% was shallower than holding BNB (69.85%), but still deep.

This BNB breakout strategy backtest uses five years of daily BNBUSDT data with a 0.1% fee on entry and exit, and reports the results without adjustment. No tuned parameters, no cherry picked dates.

The Rule: A 52-Week High Strategy Crypto Traders Can Test

A 52-week high is the highest price of the past year: about 365 bars on a daily chart, the lookback this test uses. To buy a 52-week high breakout is a momentum bet that a coin doing something new for the year keeps going.

  • Entry: the daily close crosses above the highest high of the prior 365 bars (the Donchian Channel upper band, period 365, read from the previous bar)
  • Exit: the daily close crosses below the lowest low of the prior 50 bars (the Donchian Channel lower band, period 50, read from the previous bar)
  • The idea: ride a 365-day high breakout while it lasts, and leave when price breaks a 50-day low

It is the opposite of the dip buying tested in Does Buying the Dip Work in Crypto?, and a much slower member of the family covered in Breakout Trading Strategy: Does It Work on Crypto?.

In CoinQuant, an AI trading platform, you describe a rule like this in plain English, and the platform turns it into an entry condition and an exit condition that it backtests on historical data, with no coding required.

Results vs BNB Buy and Hold

Start with the sample: the rule traded three times in five years, so every figure below rests on three outcomes. Over the full window it turned $10,000 into $11,926.70, a Total Return of 19.27%. Holding BNB turned the same $10,000 into $17,257.91 (72.58%), and holding Bitcoin finished at $15,733.43 (57.33%).

All three runs share the same window, capital, sizing and 0.1% fee, so the rows compare like with like. Win Rate and Profit Factor are not shown for buy and hold because each baseline is a single trade.

The breakout rule trailed BNB buy and hold by a wide margin on Total Return, and its Sharpe Ratio was lower too (0.26 against 0.48). Its one clear advantage was depth of loss: a Max Drawdown of 47.22% against 69.85%, while it held BNB only 17.41% of the time.

On the Performance tab, the results card marks this run "Statistically inconclusive": three trades, and it needs 50+ to rate. The platform's Buy and Hold benchmark carries no fees and ends at 72.92%, so the table uses the BNB Buy and Hold 1D 2021-2026 strategy (72.58%), which pays the 0.1% fee on entry and exit.

What the Trades Show

All three round trips are listed below, with returns after the 0.1% entry and exit fees. Dates are the fill dates reported by the backtest.

TradeEntryExitDays heldReturn after feesNet P&L after fees
12024-02-152024-07-04140+44.76%+$4,471.31
22024-12-032025-02-0261-16.09%-$2,325.89
32025-07-272025-11-21117-1.80%-$218.72

One trade made all of the profit

The first breakout filled on 2024-02-15 and rode BNB higher until 2024-07-04, returning 44.76% after fees, or $4,471.31. That single trade earned more than the test kept in the end: the net profit after all three trades was $1,926.70.

This is how a Win Rate of 33.33% can sit next to a Profit Factor of 1.76: the average win (44.76%) was far larger than the average loss (-8.95%).

The next two breakouts gave part of it back

The December 2024 signal reversed quickly and closed on 2025-02-02 at -16.09% after fees (-$2,325.89). The July 2025 signal was held for 117 days and closed almost flat at -1.80%.

No new entry fired before the test ended. In total the strategy held BNB 17.41% of the time and sat in cash for the rest.

Why a One-Year Lookback Needs History

A 365-bar channel needs 365 bars of price before it can draw its first value. If a backtest only loaded data from the first day of the window, the rule could not fire for a year. CoinQuant loaded 1,364 bars of BNB history before 2021-08-01 for this run, so the 52-week high was already defined on the first day of the test.

So the late first trade was not caused by missing history. BNB did not close above its prior 365-day high until the signal behind the 2024-02-15 entry, about two and a half years into the window. Across the 1,827 daily bars of the test, the rule entered only three times.

When you test any long lookback, check that the platform loads enough history before the start date, or the first year of results can be empty for reasons unrelated to the strategy.

What This Test Cannot Tell You

Three trades cannot prove or disprove an edge: one more losing breakout, or a different start date, could change the conclusion. The guide to crypto trading strategies, every type explained shows where a new high momentum strategy sits among the alternatives.

  • Sample size: three trades in five years; the results card itself says it needs 50+ trades to rate.
  • One coin, one window: daily BNBUSDT from 2021-08-01 to 2026-08-01. Other coins or dates could give a different answer.
  • One parameter set: a 365-bar entry channel and a 50-bar exit channel. Other exits were not tested.
  • Costs: the 0.1% fee on entry and exit is included, but slippage was not modelled, so real fills could be worse.
  • No forecast: the test says nothing about BNB or the market after August 2026.

The Practical Lesson

  • Rare by design: a one-year high triggered three entries in five years on daily BNB.
  • It trailed holding: 19.27% against 72.58% for BNB buy and hold and 57.33% for Bitcoin.
  • It fell less at the worst point: a Max Drawdown of 47.22% against 69.85%.
  • One trade did the work: the February 2024 breakout made 44.76% after fees, and the other two lost.

With three trades, treat this result as a starting point, not a verdict. In CoinQuant you can run the same rule on another coin or a lower timeframe to collect more trades, or add a second condition (CoinQuant supports multi-indicator and multi-timeframe conditions). Each variation needs its own backtest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does buying a 52-week high work in crypto?

Not convincingly in this test. On daily BNB from 2021-08-01 to 2026-08-01, the rule returned 19.27% after fees over three trades, well behind BNB buy and hold at 72.58%. Three trades are too few to call it either way.

Is a 52-week high breakout better than buy and hold?

On return, no: 19.27% against 72.58%, with a lower Sharpe Ratio (0.26 against 0.48). On depth of loss it did better, with a Max Drawdown of 47.22% against 69.85%.

What is a good exit for a 52-week high breakout strategy?

This test exited on a close below the 50-day low, which let the first trade run for 140 days. No other exit was tested on BNB here, so compare exits with separate backtests before choosing one.
